Announcement
“Ready-To-Eat Cereal Consumption Study” Association between Frequency of Ready-To-Eat Cereal Consumption, Nutrient Intakes and Body Mass Index in 4th - 6th Grade Low-Income Minority Children. A longitudinal study was conducted by the Social & Health Research Center investigators to determine the impact of breakfast type on childhood obesity. Three days of dietary intake, height and weight were collected yearly. Three groups of children were identified according to the most frequent breakfast type consumed: 1) ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) with milk, 2) breakfast typically high in fat and refined flour, and 3) no breakfast. Over the 3-year study, children who consumed RTEC breakfast were significantly leaner than children in the other two breakfast types. This study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and it will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
